How You Can Help

Chile: United Way is working with its organization in Chile—Corporacion Sociedad Activa—and its community networks to respond to the devastation caused by Saturday’s earthquake and to determine the most pressing long-term recovery needs. Your donations to Chile made through the United Way Worldwide Disaster Fund will support long-term recovery and rebuilding in Chile, focused on education, income and health, as well as to meet the needs of Chileans affected by the disaster.

Haiti: The United Way system worldwide is working through its members and other partners in Haiti to respond to this disaster. Contributions to Haiti made through the United Way Worldwide Disaster Fund support recovery and long-term rebuilding needs of the devastated Haitian communities, as well as to meet the needs of Haitians affected by the disaster who have relocated to the U.S.A. and throughout the Caribbean. When Making Donations...

  • Financial contributions are preferred.
  • Cash donations help to avoid the labor and expense of sorting, packing and transporting donations.
  • Voluntary relief agencies use cash to meet specific needs more quickly.
  • Purchasing relief supplies available in the impacted community helps the local economy recover more quickly.
  • Donate through an experienced organization.
  • Coordination is essential to ensure that the right goods in the right amounts are collected, transported and distributed.
  • To prevent waste, donations of goods should be made only to agencies that have specific requests.
  • Confirm the need before collecting.
  • A community in crisis does not have the time, manpower or money to dispose of unneeded donations.
  • Donors should be wary of anyone who claims that "everything" is needed.
  • Do not assume that supplies will be transported at no charge.
