United Way Alternative Spring Break 2010
National ASB Program – March 28th – April 3rd, 2010 in Biloxi, Mississippi
More than four years ago, Hurricane Katrina ravished the Gulf Coast. In 2005, images of destruction were broadcast around the globe and told part of the story of the communities devastated. Now, while the attention of the nation and the world has drifted to other matters, United Way of South Mississippi and local partners continue to rebuild homes, lives and communities.
During the National ASB Program, volunteers will build on the impact of peers before them when they descend upon coastal Mississippi to rebuild homes, conduct community assessment surveys, enrich educational opportunities for children and youth, and help families secure the resources they need to develop more stable, supportive environments.
In addition to volunteering daily throughout the week:
- Work with a group of dedicated peers who share your passion for making a difference in the lives of others.
- Sample some of the cuisine for which the Gulf Coast is famous.
- Have one of the most rewarding, remarkable weeks of your life.
If you’re interested in attending ASB in Biloxi, Mississippi, here are a few things you’ll need to do:
- Confirm that you can commit to volunteer for the full week of ASB in Biloxi, MS, March 28th through April 3rd.
- Complete the online application (the link is below)
- Secure $150 in donations from friends and family members to cover program costs. (Don’t worry, we’ll give you an online tool and all the coaching and support you’ll need to not only secure gifts from those around you, but also to get them totally fired up about the work you’re doing – and then we’ll work with you to make sure your donors can see the impact you make during the week!)
- All of your expenses on the ground (meals, lodging and local transportation) will be provided to you by United Way of South Mississippi and are covered by your participation fee. You are responsible for your own travel to Gulfport International Airport (if you fly) or Biloxi, MS (if you drive, train or bus).
