I LIVE UNITED by volunteering. It is how I’ve decided to live my life. I was fortunate to be reared in a family who believed in community and lived their lives helping. My parents instilled in me a belief that it is every citizen's duty to make their city, their state, their nation and the world a better place. I am also fortunate that I can volunteer on a full-time basis.
My husband and I give financially to numerous nonprofit agencies (United Way of Salt Lake included) and educational institutions.
I advocate by participating in the legislative process on the state level as well as the federal level by being a citizen lobbyist. I have lobbied on behalf of the empowerment of women and girls, foster care, domestic violence, immigration, health care, income (living wage) and education.
I am working toward systemic change in areas that serve the needs of the poor, troubled and oppressed in order to improve and enrich lives.
I personally agree with the view best stated by Margaret Meade, who said, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever does.”
I truly believe this is the way to make a difference -- advance the common good.
My advice is simple: Live your life whether by profession or volunteerism to make a difference.
